UFC on Versus 6: Cruz Defeats “Mighty Mouse” To Retain Title
By Brian Lopez-Benchimol
A bantamweight title match headlined last night’s UFC on Versus 6 card, featuring champion Dominick Cruz looking to set a record for most successful title defenses in the 135-pound division when he took on Demetrious Johnson in the main-event of the evening.
Needless to say, Cruz was successful. He had a tough challenge on his hands in Johnson, whom was game throughout the bout, utilizing his speed to jump into the pocket and through bombs. However, in the end, it was the size of Cruz who proved to be his biggest asset, muscling down his smaller opponent on the ground.
Johnson had his moments, through the grappling of Cruz proved too effective, who mounted Johnson several times throughout the bout and twice sunk in a deep rear-naked choke, though “Mighty Mouses” toughed his way out of it.
In the end, Cruz was declared the winner by a unanimous decision, handing Johnson only his second loss in 16 fights, while defending his belt for a record fourth-time as the 135-pound champion.
Additionally, a heavyweight affair took co-headlining honors, as Stefan Struve met Pat Barry. In the early goings, Struve was holding his own on the feet, though Barry was chopping down the 6-foot-11 Struve with sharp low-kicks.
Struve appeared to be limping on his lead leg in the second-round, though Struve eventually was able to close the distance and secure a head lock on Barry. The former K-1 kickboxer showed his takedown defense, though ultimately left himself open on the ground when the long limbs of Struve were able to lock up a tight triangle choke.
The powerful Barry, who stands at just 5-foot-11, hoisted Struve high over his head—ala Quinton Jackson slamming Ricardo Arona—though “Skyscraper appeared un-phased. Eventually, Struve earned the tap and with it earned the evenings “Submission of the Night” award.
