The UFC brought us a less than stacked UFC card from Germany that once featured Vitor Belfort (which gave the card a step in a better direction) in the main event. Belfort was given a title shot against Anderson Silva and Nate Marquardt filled into against Yushin Okami. The fight is still rumored to be the number one contender fight.
Marquardt and Okami went three hard fought rounds in the main event of this card. Marquardt threw his whole bag of tricks at Okami trying to slow him down to no avail. Even though the second round ended in a chorus of boos, the fight exceeded all expectations. The close fight ended with Okami scoring a unanimous decision over Marquardt.
Just moments before the card started the UFC announced that Alessio Sakara had to pull out of the co-main event against Jorge Rivera. Sakara has a unnamed illness that forced him out of the fight. This changed the card by moving Andre Winner vs Dennis Siver to the co-main event and Duane Ludwig vs Nick Osipczak to the televised card.
Andre Winner came into this fight looking to rebound from his August Loss to Nik Lentz against Dennis Siver. Siver played the villain in Winner’s story, Siver came out looking AMPED and took the fight to Winner with early strikes. Near the end of the first round Siver dropped Winner with a stiff right. Siver was able to get Winner’s back as he tried to scramble and Siver secured the rear-naked choke that ended the fight.
Amir Sadollah in his fight swarmed Peter Sobotta with explosive striking. The “TUF” winner worked his kicks and takedown defense to keep Sobotta on his heels. Sadollah kept getting the first punch off and scores good combinations, which was the key to winning this fight. The judges saw it Sadollah’s way 30-27 on all cards.
Krzysztof Soszynski needed all three rounds to take home a hard fought win over Goran Reljic. Reljic employed impressive takedowns, but stalled once on top of Soszynski. Soszynski worked his trademark Kimura in the first round, but Reljic was saved by the bell. Overall the judges say the fight in Soszynski’s favour 30-27 on all cards.
Duane Ludwig and Nick Osipczak got bump to the main card due to Alessio Sakara’s illness and did not disappoint. They traded for three hard fought rounds to give the crowd exactly what it wanted, two gladiators giving it everything they had. Ludwig stole a split decision in a very close fight.
Vladimir Matyushenko took home a much needed victory against Alexandre “Cacareco” Ferreira. The win is Matyushenko first fight on his new UFC contract and helped him rebound from his August loss to Jon Jones. Matyushenko kept the fight standing up and scored a big TKO in the opening round.
Pascal Krauss got his first UFC victory in front of his countrymen, with the win Krauss remains unbeaten at 10-0. Krauss took his opponent, Mark Scanion to the judges score cards and gave him his first loss.
Kyle Noke out grappled Rob Kimmons and forced him to tap early in the second round. Noke kept his distance early and work hard for takedowns and pressured Kimmons throughout the fight. Noke, a “TUF 11” cast member now owns a four fight winning streak.
After the fight Noke doled out praise to hi opponent, “Rob is tough. The guy is tenacious and keeps coming forward, so it was a tough fight for me. I think he wanted me to stand up, so I just wanted to mix it up a big.”
Karlos Vemola made his light-heavyweight debut against Seth Petruzelli (The Kimbo Killer). Vemola was the clear aggressor from the opening bell and overpowered Petruzelli to the mat. Petruzelli worked from his back trying to fire off a triangle choke and an arm bar attempt. Vemola’s blows became overwhelming and the referee stopped the fight.
Vemola thinks he should have made the drop to light-heavyweight sooner “It feels great, I should have listened to my coaches and managers before. A lot of guys are now going to feel my power.”
In the opening fight Carlos Eduardo Rocha kept his undefeated record intact against “TUF 11” runner up Kris McCray. McCray making his debut in the welterweight division and initially gained the upper hand and at one time took his opponents back. Rocha broke free of McCray’s hooks and quickly grabbed a knee bar, forcing McCray to tap.
The TUF fighters who lost (McCray season 11, Petuzelli season 1, Andre Winner season 9, ) add another black mark to the reputation of the fighters coming out of the “TUF” show.
