Chael Sonnen Fails Post Fight Drug Test
What does Hermes Franca, Sean Sherk & Phil Barone all have in common with Chael Sonnen? That’s right, they have all failed a post-fight drug test.
The California State Athletic Commission has disclosed that Chael Sonnen failed his post-fight drug test after his bid to dethrone current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in UFC 117.
Sonnen dominated Silva until being forced to submit due to a triangle choke/armbar at the 3:10 mark of the 5th and final round.
The CSAC did not disclose which banned substance Sonnen tested postive for, other than to say Sonnen’s post-fight sample had tested positive and that the CSAC had notified Sonnen of the positive results.
If past history is any indicator of how long Sonnen will be out of action, well, plan on Sonnen being out for a minimum of 6 months.
With Sonnen on the shelf for 6 months, the rematch between Sonnen and Silva will obviously not take place in early 2011 as anticipated. The UFC will also face another dilemna and that is how to market UFC 125 which is scheduled to occur on January 1, 2011 where it was anticipated that UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar would defend his belt against Gray Maynard.
