SEAN PIERSON: TORONTO POLICE’S LOSS IS UFC’S GAIN
Sean Pierson saw one of his life-long dream begin on Saturday night in Montréal, and this week he saw his second life-long dream end. Pierson’s performance over Matt Riddle at UFC 124 has made the Toronto police department rethink the decision to hire Pierson.
The Toronto police department has cited concerns about his (old) nickname and the time that Pierson would commit to fighting. The department should have known this before they asked Pierson to join the force. These were not hidden from anyone; it was accessible on Sherdog and Wikipedia. I mean Wikipedia for god sakes!
Pierson was slated to start with the police force a few days after winning a unanimous decision victory over Riddle, which should have been fight of the night. Then following the fight, when he should have been starting his second dream career, he was asked to turn in his uniform and stay away from the department until they investigate further.
Pierson’s nickname in question was once “Pimp Daddy” a moniker that he wore during his younger years (in his 20′s) and has since been retired. Pierson, who is 34, has been married for nine years and has a young son.
“I can appreciate the position they’re in with what I do,” said Pierson. “I don’t look at mixed martial arts as a negative, but I think the mainstream still looks at us as a bit of a black eye.”
The official word from the Toronto Police Department is that all the officers need to clear their secondary employment, which I’m sure has a lot do with the fact that Toronto is not accepting of MMA. A lot of news outlets in the area are not as excited about the legalization of MMA (which happened in August). The decision by the Toronto Police Department is now making a very hard decision for Pierson very easy; it looks like MMA is his new career from here on out. The UFC is going to benefit from the police department’s gaffe!
