In a recent article in Yahoo Sports, Ed Soares was referred to as one of the most powerful managers in MMA.  From a fighter/manager perspective, Ed has the credentials to back up that claim. Ed has under management the current UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva; the current UFC light-heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida; the former UFC heavyweight champion, Antonio Nogeria; a top contender in the light-heavyweight division Antonio Rogerio Nogeria.  Notwithstanding a stable of some of the formidable fighters in all of mixed martial arts, but the question that stands front and center is – who is responsible for promoting the fighter?

This is not an indictment or criticism of Ed Soares.  Ed does a great job for his fighters.  The issue is about the symbiosis or relationship between the manager and the promoter.  Currently that relationship isn’t very good.  There is a certain amount of disdain by each side for the other.

The promoter tells the fighter to trust the promoter and he will make him a star and then the money will come.  In all honesty, there is some truth to that position.  The promoter has to make the fighter a household name in order to sell fights.  The greater the name recognition, the easier it is to promote the fight and the event to the casual fight fan.

On the other side of the table is the fighter’s manager.  The manager’s job is to get the most money for his fighter, from the promoter via the fighter’s contract and from sponsorships.

The challenge or conflict that exists right now in the UFC is that the fighters don’t trust the promoter and the promoter only promotes the fighter in a limited area.  Look at it this way, the promoter doesn’t go out and get the smaller sponsors for a fighter.  The fighter finds the smaller sponsor and puts the logo on his shorts and banner or wears his t-shirt.  The UFC charges a sponsorship premium for these smaller sponsors because the smaller sponsors are riding the coat tails and investment of the UFC to promote their product without any benefit to the UFC.

On the other hand, the UFC only promotes a limited number of fighters with its top sponsors like Bud Light and Harley Davidson.  In addition, the UFC’s large corporate sponsors don’t generally incorporate the fighters into their ad campaigns.  Georges St. Pierre is out getting his own sponsorship deals (i.e. Under Armor).  The UFC asks, and rightfully so, what’s in it for the UFC?  What benefit will the UFC get from GSP’s Under Armor sponsorship deal?  The answer – none.   But when is the last time you saw a fighter in a Burger King commercial which is aired during the The Ultimate Fighter reality show?

The managers and the promoter are going to have to figure out a way to work together to co-promote the fighters so that both the fighters and the promoter profit from the sponsorship deal.

If the UFC is truly using a NASCAR model, then they need to look at how NASCAR promotes its drivers.  In NASCAR, when you think Lowe’s you think Jimmie Johnson.  Gillette and Coca-Cola have incorporated drivers into the NASCAR ad campaigns.  In order for the UFC to get to the next level, they will need to develop the next Iceman, Huntington Beach-Bad Boy or Captain America.  Dana gets it, that is what he is trying to do, but does the UFC PR machine and sponsorship division understand their role and do they know how to promote a fighter and blend the fighter into the corporate ad campaign.  Right now, the corporate sponsors promote the events but not fighters.

In order to be a real power broker, the managers and the promoter are going to have to do a better job of trusting each other and learning how to co-promote the fighters to make the next star.  If they don’t, the UFC will struggle in developing the next star.
