If you’re anything like us here at MNL, you got really excited by hearing the rumors about EA Sports MMA. Personally I love the EA Sports games, they have the most realistic feel and work hard at giving you, the gamer, the best experience for your money.

Earlier this week the demo to a set of eager fans awaiting their first glimpse of Fedor, Overeem, and Couture. The title hosted the fight without UFC contracts (with the exception of Randy Couture) and after playing the demo, it gave me little more than that.

If you’re reading this article, you most likely own one or more of EA Sports” games: NBA Elite, Madden11, NCAA 11, or Fight Night Round, whatever. They are even coming out with a new NBA Jams game. These tiles are always top in the genre or list as best of the best. They sell millions of copies and everyone is always happy.

That was until now, EA’s first shot at MMA needed to be a good one to compete with the UFC built in market. It failed miserably! It can be broken down into three simple reasons.

1. Game play: After playing the demo I will say this, the game is too easy. They made the takedowns, throws, ground transitions and escapes too simple. These are complicated things in the Octagon or ring. It would be like me telling you that (in Madden) if you hit the X button you can sack the quarterback without a lineman touching you 90% of the time. Also the punching system is too rudimentary, using the joystick to throw crosses and hooks are easy, but the straight jab is more challenging. EA gave the game the joystick like Fight Night franchise, without all of the flashy options.

2. Lacking Jiu-Jitsu: I already mentioned the fact that takedowns and throws have one-button usages. Also the ground transitions are so poorly done that you can’t choose which side you move to, some fighters can only go one way, although it is now easier to more from full guard to half guard. (just keep pushing A). Also, it’s almost childs play to get your opponent off of you. (hit that B buttons, no MASH that thing!) The worst of the worst is the submissions, just tap the X button and your opponent can stop you until it’s on. Then just tap your X buttons and keep your stamina up higher than your opponents’ and BAM you get him to tap. (side note: awesome graphics showing the bones inside the limb you are working on during submissions.)

3. Play ability: I can play UFC 2010 for hours, but after 10 minutes of EA’s demo I couldn’t take it anymore. The fighting system is so ugly and choppy I couldn’t stand even one more minute of time wasted on this game when I own the better version of it sitting on the shelf.

EA Sports I expected more from you! I expected better game play to make for the smaller roster. Honestly EA you won’t get your average fan to pick up this title, not sitting next to UFC 2010 and after your demo, you’re not getting the super fans either.
